Where did the legend of the “Nazi flying saucer” really come from?

For decades, books, magazines, documentaries, and websites have repeated extraordinary claims about secret German disc-shaped aircraft supposedly developed during the final years of the Second World War. These stories have become so familiar that they are often presented as established history. Yet behind them lies a far more complex—and far more revealing—story.

In Flying Saucers from Naziland, Maurizio Verga reconstructs the origins of the German saucer myth from the ground up. Drawing on an extensive body of contemporary newspapers, magazines, archival records, technical claims, drawings, and other original documentation, he traces how the first stories emerged, how they spread across postwar Europe, and how they gradually merged with the rapidly expanding flying-saucer phenomenon.

Figures such as Rudolf Schriever, Giuseppe Belluzzo, Andreas Epp, and numerous lesser-known claimants appear here not as members of a single hidden technological program, but as participants—directly or indirectly—in an evolving narrative shaped by sensational journalism, Cold War anxieties, fascination with German wartime technology, personal ambition, commercial opportunity, speculation, and repeated borrowing from earlier reports.

The book follows these stories as they changed from one publication to another. Claims were embellished, names and projects became linked, technical details were added, and uncertain press reports slowly acquired the appearance of historical fact. What began as scattered postwar stories eventually developed into a remarkably durable mythology: the idea that Nazi Germany had created revolutionary disc-shaped aircraft years before the modern UFO era.

Rather than repeating familiar legends, this study examines how those legends were actually constructed. It places the alleged German saucer projects in their original historical and cultural setting, compares later claims with their earliest known sources, and shows how memory, journalism, technology, politics, and popular imagination combined to create one of the most persistent myths of twentieth-century alternative history.

The result is not simply a book about supposed secret aircraft. It is an investigation into the making of a modern technological legend and into the process by which speculation can be repeated, reshaped, amplified, and eventually mistaken for documented history.

This is the first volume of a trilogy devoted to the origins, development, and transformation of the Nazi UFO myth.

It does not ask whether the legend is exciting.
It asks a more important question:
How did it begin?
